I am such a lucky boy.

Spending today with April on her 22nd birthday was absolutely wonderful. We had sushi for lunch at N’Joy in Mill Creek. And sushi for dinner (accompanied by Aileen & Jake, and Ayano!) at Umi Sake House in Seattle. We spent some time walking around the Seattle Center and relaxing at the fountain as we watched it dance along to the music playing.

All in all it was a great day. I just got home from dropping her off at the airport. She caught a red-eye flight back to Indianapolis and has classes tomorrow afternoon. I’m proud of her for keeping her word to her professors. (She cleared missing the first few days of school with them before flying out for my sister’s wedding.) I wish this distance wasn’t a factor in our relationship, but if anything could come from it I would say that it’s the lesson of us never taking a moment with each other for granted when we’re together. And for that I am very thankful.

I miss her already. She is my best friend; my confidant.

My name is Eric Bowley. I’ve been intrigued by the concept of spoon rings for about 2 years now. My girlfriend, who lives in the Midwest, has owned her spoon ring since she was in middle school. I had never seen a spoon ring before hers! In fact, nobody that I’ve talked to in the Northwest seems to know much about them or where to find a spoon ring if someone wanted to buy one. That sparked the idea for me. I really liked the thought of taking an old silver spoon and transforming it into something that someone might love and wear everyday.

About a month ago I decided that I wanted to start making spoon rings myself. I ordered the tools and hit a ton of antique stores to look for old vintage spoons. I’ve probably visited over 30 antique stores/malls over the last few weeks and I’ve had some incredible finds. I set up a workshop inside of my garage and began hand-making each spoon ring individually. Almost all of the rings are size 7, but I can adjust them specifically to nearly any size before shipping.

It is with great pleasure that I officially introduce you to Silver & Spoon!

We specialize in handcrafted vintage antique spoon rings. We take great pride in hunting for spoons that have beautiful patterns, most of which date from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. By hand we transform old pieces of silver flatware into modern pieces of jewelry. These affordable and beautiful rings make great gifts or additions to anyone’s daily accessory routine. We only use genuine vintage antique spoons in creating each of our rings. No reproductions.

I’ve decided that I am going to make a donation of $2.00 from every spoon ring sold by Silver & Spoon to the Riley Hospital For Children through the annual Indiana University Dance Marathon. Riley is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive outpatient care facilities for children. I believe in what Riley stands for and I support them in their mission to make the lives of children who are in need of medical care easier and more comfortable.

Katy Perry - “E.T.”

I’m guessing this song will eventually be all over the radio if it isn’t already. It’s so freaking catchy. I was really looking forward to Katy Perry’s new album because I love her voice. (She made that new version of “Starstrukk” by 3OH!3 come alive all over again.) Unfortunately there are less songs on her new record that I love than I’d hoped to. This however, is one of the songs I can’t get out of my head. The kind of song you fear that you’ll eventually hate because you listen to it in your mind even when you’re not listening to it hoping it won’t grow old.

Fun Fact: We named a new song of The Scene Aesthetic record after Katy Perry calling it “Katy (Give Me A Shot)”; now to finalize the release of THAT album!

April and I made a weekend getaway trip to Orcas Island (one of the many beautiful islands off the coast of Washington) the last week she was here before going back to school. We stayed at a beautiful little place called Doe Bay Resort & Retreat and to make a long story short, we stumbled upon something absolutely breathtaking and beautiful while exploring the in the woods.

We discovered The Maldives.

Every year Doe Bay hosts a music festival for a few days and we visited the island the day after the festival ended. The Maldives were performing an acoustic session for Seattle’s Sound On The Sound music blog. We slowly crept up to the three men perched on a hill surrounded by a few of their friends and a cameraman. It was a pretty special moment to witness. (April and I were standing about 20 feet away from where this video was being shot.)

There was only one way to properly begin The Doe Bay Sessions, with a band who helped Doe Bay Festival get its start: The Maldives. Seattle’s own wrangler headbangers are the only band to have played all three Doe Bay Festivals and they hold the only life-long invitation to play.

Many of the most memorable moments of Doe Bay, be it the Donald Duck rap battles, slip’n’sides, or drinking tequila out of sippy cups, were organized or led by a Maldive. Thanks to their sunny afternoon session, perched atop a mossy knoll off the trail, the Maldives were certainly responsible for some of our favorite Doe Bay memories. And we are so happy we get to share them with you today.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’ve completed it at least 15 times since the first time I read it when I was 12 years old.

April and I listened to the entire audiobook on our drive from Seattle to Indiana. I think she liked it too.

If you’ve never picked it up, do yourself a favor and grab a copy. You’ll thank me later.
